Musical extremes

So, those of you who know me, know that I am a bit of a musicals fan, so it won’t be any surprise that we checked out was on offer during our few days in Sydney. We ended up seeing two musicals (in one day); an overindulgence perhaps – but totally worth it!

Show #1 was Sunset Boulevard at the Sydney Opera House. Yes, we got to see a show in the Sydney Opera House! What an amazing building (Neil was in awe over the concrete work) and what a fantastic view over the harbour. The performance was in the smaller of the two theatres where even the cheap seats (the ones we were in) are still great. Sunset Boulevard is a dark story, with some of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic pieces, and the set was perfect for it. Even the creaks of the set moving were part of atmosphere. And we had the experience of Sarah Brightman as the lead – how lucky are we!

Show #2? Titanique at The Grand Electric. According to the play’s website, Titanique is a musical celebration that happens “when the music of Celine Dion makes sweet Canadian love with the eleven-time Oscar winning film Titanic.” It is hysterical, sooooo fun, and felt like a party (but definitely not one for kids). The place was packed with an audience ready to have a good time. Great cocktails (sadly I can’t remember the names but they were good!), people in sailor hats, lots of singing, and audience engagement – need I say more? Screamingly funny, Neil was crying he was laughing so much.

It was a great day with two wonderful and completely different shows – definitely watched in the right order.
