A lightning visit to Scotland

We didn’t do Scotland justice – and we knew that would be the case.

In mid-October we arrived in Edinburgh to meet up with my sister and brother-in-law. It was my first time in Scotland and I was excited to be there!

Our three nights in Edinburgh can be summarized by 4 Cs: castle, closes, climbing, and cosy pubs. Oh, and crowds. I was surprised by the number of tourists around in the middle of October – and may have mentioned on more than one occasion that I couldn’t imagine what it would be like at the height of summer.

One of the many closes – we took a great tour of one close that gave us a sense as to life in Edinburgh hundreds of years ago for many people.

From Edinburgh we rented a car for two days. We drove up to Inverness – stopping for lunch and a wander around Pitlochry and a hike to the Bruar Falls. We arrived in Inverness to a beautiful sunset and a good pint in a pub near to where we were staying. We also discovered a new distillery that will be ready to share its first whiskey in a couple of years.

The next day we drove west along Lochness, stopping at Urquhart Castle and Neptune’s Ladder, before turning south to stay the night at a lovely little hotel in Doune. The drive was wet, misty, and stunning.

The time in Scotland was too short. I definitely need to go back.
